For my assignment this week, I choose to talk about the head of the preschool department at my school, Mrs. N. The reason for my choice is that over the 18 years I have known her; she has only displayed highly effective communication skills and has demonstrated great competence in problem-solving and decision-making. She is deliberate in recognizing her role in communication and the deep impact she can make on relationships between home and school as well as within the staff. She has also established solid connections with families and colleagues, which has enabled her to provide great help and support to those within her circle. In addition, she is very respectful in receiving others and always demonstrates great sensitivity to cultural differences- something that has drawn her close to the parents and made her earn their trust. She greets every child by name (We have over 400 students at our preschool), and I am often humbled by her overwhelming positivism throughout each day. Another valuable aspect of Mrs. N is the mentoring relationships she has made with many teachers. She has this great ability to share her experience and spread awareness among those in the field. I believe this is a great asset for communicators, because lacking the ability to impart knowledge to others and exchange information deters them from connecting with other individuals and in the educator's case; establishing partnerships with families.
I
absolutely would like to model my own communication behaviors after Mrs. N. I
would like to adapt her mindfulness and the poise she preserves throughout her
interactions, especially during challenging moments.
Hi Reem,
ReplyDeleteWhat a touching story. Mrs. N. is a wonderful role model at your school. With her continued positivism, I am sure the children and their family feel welcome and comfortable. Having a great leader inspires other to do well and to keep a certain standard going. I can tell you from experience, when you work with people that do not have the best interest of your program at heart it shows and it affects the whole program. I am glad you have such as inspirational person to work with every day. I am sure you will obtain all the qualities to make you a role model for others as well. Thank you for sharing.

Mrs. N sounds like a truly compassionate individual. It is very impressive how she knows and is able to recognize all 400 students. That is a great demonstration of communication with the children. She is demonstrating that she cares enough to get to know their names and welcome them to the school. She sounds like a great person to work for and to take communication advice from.
ReplyDeleteHi Reem,
ReplyDeleteI am just now getting over the fact that you have over 400 students in your preschool! It sounds like Mrs. N is an incredible leader and communicator. What an amazing model she is for the staff and for the students. My being such a skilled leader, she is obviously able to create a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment in which all students can learn and all teachers can teach. I have worked for many people who are ineffective in their ability to communicate, which translates into ineffective leadership. You are very lucky to have had Mrs. N in your personal and professional life for over 18 years!

I love that so many of us have such great mentors and role models in the ECE field. It makes me want to continue to learn and develop my skills in order to be worthy of taking over someday when they retire. It also helps us see and learn from the best and appreciate their advice and leadership.

ReplyDeleteYour mentor sounds a great deal like the mentor I mentioned in my blog post. It is one thing to be very knowledgeable in the field. It is another to be able to share that knowledge effectively as a mentor/teacher/inspiration.
Thanks for sharing
